Bach’s Magnificat in D major - SATB

With “Magnificat+”, the Swedish composer Mårten Jansson presents a new addition to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D major BWV 243. It consists of four movements that are inserted into Bach’s Magnificat at the points where the Christmas movements are heard in the original work.

Based on texts by the American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri, Jansson’s music creates an appealing contrast to Bach’s work whilst maintaining a clear musical connection to the original. The solo sopranos in movements A, B and C add a more personal dimension to the Magnificat text; movement D is written for a cappella choir. As the texts – unlike the original inserted movements – do not refer to Christmas, “Magnificat+” can be performed at any time of year.

Baerenreiter-Verlag Karl Voetterle GmbH & Co.
