Composed over a period of nearly four decades (1882-1921), Fauré's '13 Barcarolles' are highly representative of his piano output and are considered to be his most characteristic works. They reflect his departure from the romantic idiom of Chopin and Mendelssohn in particular, towards an independent musical language in which he harmoniously harmonized tradition and emerging modernity.

Bärenreiter is now making these important work complexes accessible in critical and practical Urtext editions based on the “Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré”. They reflect the latest research and provide the performer with detailed forewords on the origin and significance of the works as well as valuable information on historical interpretation.
In addition to all available handwritten and printed sources, piano rolls with recordings by the composer were also consulted, which led to new insights, particularly with regard to the “Valses Caprices”.

Christophe Grabowski, French pianist and doctorate in musicology, studied in Warsaw and Paris. Among other things, he is editor of a volume of the “Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré”, series editor of the new Chopin complete edition (“Complete Chopin. A New Critical Edition”) and two volumes of the “Édition Complète des Œuvres de Claude Debussy”. Together with John Rink he published the "Annotated Catalog of Chopin's First Editions" in 2010.
