Born and brought up in Germany, Kuhlau fled to Copenhagen in 1810 to avoid being conscripted into Napoleon's army. He rapidly made a name as a pianist and composer, and hereceived an appointment as court chamber musician. His sonatinas intended for his p upils have remained popular for more than 150years, although they have suffered at the hands of over-zealous editors. This edition of the Op.88 Sonatinas is based on the original 1827 publication.
